Monday, April 22, marks Earth Day, a global event aimed at raising awareness about environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices. This year, individuals and families are encouraged to participate in the Planet vs Plastics campaign by engaging in activities such as recycling, reducing plastic use, planting trees and gardens, learning about climate change, and volunteering within their communities.

Participants can take action against plastic pollution by switching to reusable items like BPA-free bottles and bags. "Plastics clog our waterways, litter our communities, and present risks to the human body," the campaign highlights. More information on plastic pollution is available at Earth Day's official website.

Pollinator gardens are another focus of this year's initiatives. These gardens support pollinators such as butterflies and bees that are essential for plant reproduction and food production. Many Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) have their own pollinator gardens, providing opportunities for children to get involved at school or at home.

Sustainable fashion is also being promoted as part of Earth Day efforts. The campaign encourages learning about manufacturing clothing with renewable energy sources and materials that can be repaired or recycled. Details on sustainable fashion can be found on the Earth Day website.

In Gwinnett County, several events will take place around Earth Day. Residents can attend free activities at various branches of the Gwinnett County Public Library or participate in local events organized by Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. The organization is affiliated with Keep America Beautiful and works towards a Sustainable Gwinnett.

Live Healthy Gwinnett offers programs encouraging personal wellness through community garden initiatives among other activities. For those interested in climate advocacy, the Citizens’ Climate Lobby has a chapter in Gwinnett County.

Resources such as toolkits for Earth Day actions are available online for those looking to make a difference beyond local events.
