An event at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST) marked a significant moment for members of the Black Student Union (BSU) as they celebrated Black History Month. The highlight was a visit from former Georgia State Representative Stacey Abrams on Valentine's Day.

The BSU students had earlier been tasked with inviting Civil Rights leaders from Atlanta to participate in their Black History Spirit Week activities. Stacey Abrams accepted their invitation, much to the excitement of the students. "There was a delay in [students’] response when the faculty told them the good news that Ms. Abrams would visit," said Katrina Cole-Garner, GSMST Counselor and BSU Sponsor.

Asher, a junior at GSMST and member of BSU, expressed his surprise and excitement upon receiving Abrams' response. He noted that it was an accomplishment for their relatively new organization, which began in 2022 to support and provide representation for students.

During her visit, Abrams engaged with students by taking photos and participating in discussions about education, politics, and life challenges. She emphasized the importance of confronting adversity: “Your first job in the face of adversity is to confront it,” she told students.

Abrams shared insights from her own experiences as a graduate from DeKalb County's Avondale High School and Spelman College. She spoke about overcoming obstacles while pursuing education and political ambitions. Kay, another junior at GSMST, appreciated seeing someone accomplished who represents what many aspire to achieve.

The discussion covered topics such as college preparation, voting importance, community involvement, service responsibilities to oneself and others. Abrams advised on dealing with defeat: “I don’t internalize defeat... When you learn your lessons, you give yourself a roadmap to try again.”

The event concluded with group photos with Abrams. Reflecting on its success, BSU members encouraged other schools to foster similar initiatives that unify and educate students.

Asher added that being part of BSU is his favorite experience due to working alongside peers who have become friends through shared activities.
