Reading presents challenges for many students due to its complex nature, involving multiple interconnected tasks. Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) acknowledges these challenges and employs a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to address diverse learning needs.

Students often struggle with phonemic awareness and phonics, vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension. "Research shows that teaching these skills in a clear and organized way helps build a strong foundation for reading," emphasizes the importance of structured skill development.

GCPS's MTSS framework comprises three tiers:

- Tier 1 involves high-quality classroom instruction with universal screening, using evidence-based practices.

- Tier 2 offers targeted interventions for those needing additional support in specific skills like decoding.

- Tier 3 provides intensive, individualized support tailored to unique student needs.

The system is flexible, allowing students to move between tiers based on progress. Families are informed throughout this process.

Parents also play a vital role in supporting their child's reading development. Suggestions include making reading a daily habit, engaging in read-aloud sessions, playing phonics games, building vocabulary through conversation, encouraging repeated readings for fluency improvement, asking questions post-reading to enhance understanding, sharing personal reading experiences as motivation, utilizing technology like e-books and audiobooks, setting fun reading challenges, and seeking help if concerned about their child's progress.

"Early intervention is key," notes GCPS regarding timely support. The school district aims to work collaboratively with families to nurture a lifelong love of reading among students.

"Remember," GCPS advises parents and educators alike: "Reading is a journey that each child takes at their own pace." This journey involves small victories leading to significant milestones as children grow into confident readers. GCPS encourages parents to reach out if they have concerns or need advice because "together," they can foster an enduring passion for reading among young learners.
