Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is addressing concerns from parents following a tragic event in Barrow County. Parents have expressed worries about threats against schools circulating on social media. Dr. Calvin J. Watts, Superintendent of GCPS, assured families that the district is committed to student and staff safety.
School Resource Officers (SROs), along with state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies, are investigating reported threats. "Please know that Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is unwavering in its commitment to the safety and well-being of all our students and staff," stated Dr. Watts.
In response to the incident, GCPS has increased police presence around schools and offers counseling services for students and staff affected by the tragedy. Support has also been extended to colleagues in Barrow County.
Dr. Watts outlined existing security measures within the district:
- 115 SROs are employed across high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools.
- The Centegix Crisis Alert system enables discreet calls for help with precise location details.
- Over 11,000 security cameras are installed across campuses.
- Security vestibules control building access; the Raptor system screens visitors against the National Sex Offender Registry.
- Regular safety drills prepare students and staff for emergencies.
- School counselors provide mental health support and intervention.
The GCPS Tips app allows anonymous reporting of safety or mental health concerns.
"GCPS remains dedicated to keeping our schools safe and secure," affirmed Dr. Watts.
